Very clever little device.,
This infuser has several thoughtful touches that make it convenient for brewing a cup of tea. The holes in the infuser are quite small, so very little matter escapes into the cup. The flat bottom rests neatly in the bottom of the cup—handy for when you are using a small cup that might tip if the infuser leaned on the side. The plunger works fairly well to press the tea when you are done steeping, and the intra-plunger compartment for storing dry tea leaves holds enough for 4 cups. The little clear holder keeps things neat when your steeping is done.
Two small issues: the infuser is fairly narrow, providing limited space for the tea leaves to bloom, and the same narrowness makes it a slight challenge to clean, especially if the plunger has firmly pressed the tea leaves into the bottom! I found that the best method was to place the clear cap over the infuser, partially fill the infuser column with water, cover the top with my hand, and shake vigorously, although some leaves needed prodding to dislodge. Also, the upper portions are made of plastic, although in a small cup the plastic does not come in much contact with the hot water.
ETA: The plastic, per Tovolo customer service, is polypropylene (BPA-free), so concerns about the plastic touching the water are moot.

very difficult to clean,
When I first saw this at Barnies in the Mall I was so excited. It seemed like the coolest thing since sliced bread. The excitement faded with the first use. I infused Caranda’s Spirit Blend tea and because of the fine holes in the mesh, it took longer than normal for the water to enter and mix with the teas. The infuser displaces a lot of water room in a tea mug, so once you pull it out expect to see the tea level to be about 1 inch below the rim of your mug.
The other reviewer was correct about cleaning. The long narrow design makes it nearly impossible to get all the tea out with out a lot of banging and digging with a butter knife to loosen it up.
All in all, it’s pretty but it just doesn’t do a good job.

This is a great device and maybe some people don’t know how to use it..,
First of all, be aware that, although not completely easy to clean, the thing comes apart. The metal cylindrical piece comes apart from the rest of the device, so the hard part is getting the pressed leaves out of the bottom of the cylinder (a few taps will get it out). This is MUCH better than a tea ball, as tea balls generally leak leaves out of the holes – this doesn’t! As far as squeezing out the water from the device…you should steep the tea and only squeeze the plunger once your tea is made to get rid of the excess water…other than getting the packed leaves out, this is a GREAT device. I highly recommend it.
